3D Shapes

Here are the 3D shapes that we know...
A sphere, a cylinder, a cube, a cone and a pyramid!!
(Ask your kiddo about the song we learned today!)

We used clay today to make and manipulate our 3D shapes we are learning.

Working with our clay to make 3D shapes.

Exploring Shapes with Geoboards

We dove head first into our Geometry Unit! Our kiddos have learned many attributes of different shapes!  They have explored these shapes using our Geoboards!  They have loved creating different shapes and identifying that shape's attributes! These Geoboards will be added to our Math Center rotations!

Here is a picture of the shapes we have been studying in class! Quiz your child at home and see if they know them!

Six Tiles in All

We learned a new game in Math Workshop today!
Students worked individually to find different ways to arrange six tiles so that all of the tiles touch in some way.  The game is called Six Tiles in All!

Measuring with Snap Cubes!

We have started a brand new Math Unit today on Measurement!  We had such a fun time beginning this unit by measuring our feet!

Today we used math manipulatives, snap cubes, to measure our shoes. We talked in great detail about how important it is to be accurate when we measure.

Here are some snapshots of our kiddos in action:

After measuring his or her foot, our students then wrote down the length on a post it note. After compiling and organizing the data as a class, we discovered that most of our kiddos have feet measuring 10 snap cubes!

The kiddos really enjoyed our lesson today! We are excited to see how much they are going to learn about measurement!

Have some fun at home with your child asking them to measuring items around the house!

Measurement Unit

We have started our new Math unit of Measurement! Today we focused on new vocabulary: measure, length, and measurement. Our students enjoyed measuring objects around the room with counting cubes!

After measuring a variety of objects, we compared measurements and discussed the shortest and longest items they measured!

In future lessons, we will measure with new units of measure such as tiles and paper clips!

Quick Images with 5th Grade Buddies!

On Friday, we met up with our 5th Grade Buddies! Our first graders were very excited to be reunited as they had been asking all week about what we were going to do with our buddies!

This week we focused on playing the Quick Image Math Game. The buddies took turns placing counters on tens-frames without his or her buddy looking. The partner then was given 2 seconds to look at the image and then had to determine how many counters were shown on the tens-frames!

The buddies discussed the strategies they used in order to determine the number of counters in such a short amount of time! Our 1st graders LOVE playing this game and I think that some of our 1st graders were better at this game than our 5th grade buddies! Shhhh! We will let that be our little secret! :)

Here are some shots we captured of our kiddos in action!

Reflex Math Monday!

We are SO excited to share that four of our amazing first graders have received awards for their progress on Reflex Math!

Congratulations to the students pictured above! Job well done! These students have answered anywhere from 1,000 up to 2,000 math facts!

Reflex math is a great way to increase fluency with math while having fun! Keep up the great work kiddos!
